The surgery is inconspicuous, sober and lasting.

The project does not impose itself on places, but is a part of it, in an intrinsic and coherent way. For the flooring we investigated the local and consolidated solutions, which make use of river pebbles and splitted paving.

It was preferred to use a stone with marked oxidation and coloring. Furthermore, material from the demolition of the cantonal road was fortunately found. It was decided to reuse it for detailed solutions, such as the rainwater drainage channel or for grafting the flooring onto the paths that climb up from the lakefront towards the core.

The lake railing has a marked and dry presence, which does not impose itself however, but coexists in a polite way with the view of the beautiful lake landscape of Lake Maggiore.

White House in Rovio

The project aims to bring out and exalt the peculiar, powerful and exuberant qualities of the territory in which it is inserted, as well as to interact with them.

On the steep rocky terrain, two flat gardens have been conceived, at different heights, defined by the exposed bare rock and stone walls of the place.

The house presents itself as a pivot between the two terraces, creating at the same time a connection and spatial distinction and giving each garden its own distinct characteristics.

The lower garden, one level above the street, is detached from the public place and thus acquires more privacy. The interior spaces with large windows overlook the breathtaking landscape as if to compare man with the infinite. Magic moments are created where the crystal clear water of the pool touches the lake of Lake Ceresio.

The upper garden, bordered by aromatic herbs, takes on a domestic and intimate dimension conferred by the nearby slope and by the proximity of the trees. The south-facing terrace is in continuity with the fluid and open space of the living area and allows the vital relationship with the forest upstream.

From the safe and quiet stay, one can enjoy without barriers of the ever-changing and magnificent spectacle of the fluctuation of light according to weather conditions and the passage of time. The long, full-height window denies the limit between inside and outside and brings the landscape back to the living room.

The essential volumetric of the building, accentuated by the white color, is enriched by excavated spaces that bring depth and dynamism to the facade in two significant moments of the project. One of the concavities forms a portico that allows you to enter the house on the ground floor, while the covered terrace on the first floor shapes a large protected void, crossed by an external staircase that connects the lower and upper gardens, the distant lake and the mountain. adjoining, the exterior and the interior.

The relationship between full and empty of the facade coherently reflects the function of inhabited spaces and signals structural engineering components, especially where there are important changes.

Inside the house the staircase, illuminated by zenith light, offers a moment of recollection before the progressive and intense discovery of the living room, which opens onto the magnificent landscape.
